I Tried Grimaces McDonald's Birthday Meal & Was Lovin It'

The throwback of seeing McDonald's Grimace will either send you into a fit of giggles or a terrifying tailspin depending on how your inner child remembers this giant purple creature. The beloved McDonald's character is celebrating his 52nd birthday at McDonald’s starting this week and he’s back in full force to celebrate after a years-long disappearance from the public eye.

That means, in addition to a whole slew of other birthday-related festivities, you can grab one of his limited-edition meals at Mcdonald's complete with (in true Grimace fashion) a giant purple milkshake.

Who Is McDonald’s Grimace?

In case you didn’t know, Grimace is an unknown creature introduced by McDonald’s in the ‘70s but he wasn’t always jolly. He started out as an evil villain who stole the cups from Mickey D’s to prevent people from enjoying milkshakes. McDonald’s eventually reimagined this creature into Ronald McDonald’s lovable but dopey BFF. Even though he’s been out of the spotlight for a second, McDonald’s never forgot about Grimace, saying that he’s been a fan-favorite for years, “known for his signature fuzzy purple look, friendly and playful personality, love for shakes and of course—ambiguous nature.”

What Is the McDonald’s Grimace Birthday Celebration?

To give us that throwback feeling of birthday parties in the ball pits, McDonald’s has released a limited-edition Grimace birthday meal, a birthday-themed retro-esque video game on their website, a line of purple creature merchandise that’s guaranteed to make you smile (like socks, bucket hats and tee shirts) and a charity campaign for the Ronald McDonald House. McDonald’s says that instead of fans getting Grimace a gift, on June 13 and 14, fans can check out McDonald's Instagram story and share a picture of their favorite birthday memory via the "add yours" sticker. For every picture shared, they will donate $5 to the Ronald McDonald House.

What Is the McDonald’s Grimace Birthday Meal?

Starting this week, McDonald’s is offering the choice of a 10-piece Chicken McNugget or a Big Mac along with fries and a purple vanilla milkshake “inspired by Grimace's iconic color and sweetness.” You can order the meal either in the restaurants (at the counter or at the kiosk) or on the app. Either meal will run you around $13. A good piece of info is that the shake comes as part of the meal and you aren’t able to order it a la carte so head to McDonald’s ready for a full meal.

What Does the Grimace Birthday Shake Taste Like?

Since most people know what a Big Mac and fries from McDonald’s taste like, I don’t have to break it down for you. But the shake is what’s new here. It’s a bright purple color, inspired by the grand Grimace himself, and the taste, as one TikToker puts it "It’s actually really good😭 it tastes like berries and vanilla," not grape as one would assume. The predominant flavor is the berry one, and McDonald’s lists their vanilla soft serve and “Grimace Shake Syrup” as some of the ingredients in this sweet sip, but no mention of berries whatsoever. The first sip was a bit odd as I was trying to place the flavor. You’re continuously curious drinking it (wondering what the flavor is exactly and also what exactly Grimace is) and it’s nostalgic in a way you can’t quite place. Is it reminiscent of blueberry syrup from IHOP? Costco blueberry muffins? The Entenmann's Little Bites muffins? (I concluded it was the last one). You’ll try to figure it out like I did sip after sip until you reach the end in a melted whipped cream-berry-flavored frenzy. As one TikToker puts it "idk how to explain the taste but it kinda slaps."

Try the McDonald’s Grimace Birthday Meal at participating McDonald’s beginning June 12.
