A 'Star Wars' Character Is Now the Voice of Ukrainian Air Raid App

The beloved character will help Ukrainians evade Russian missiles, bombs and drones.

Star Wars will be used to aid people during a real war.

As reported by the Associated Press, Mark Hamill will lend his voice in character as Luke Skywalker to "Air Alert," a Ukrainian smartphone app that alerts citizens when there's a bomb threat from Russia.

The app is linked to Ukraine's air defense system. When the sirens go off, the app "also warns Ukrainians that Russian missiles, bombs and deadly exploding drones may be incoming."

One of the recordings of Hamill on the app features him saying, "Don't be careless. Your overconfidence is your weakness," which is a quote from Return of the Jedi.

"Attention. Air raid alert," and, "Proceed to the nearest shelter," are also among the other phrases used by Hamill.

When there is no longer danger, Hamill's voice says, "May the Force be with you."

The Star Wars star told the publication that he's admired how Ukraine "has shown such resilience…under such terrible circumstances."

"A fairy tale about good versus evil is resonant with what’s going on in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people rallying to the cause and responding so heroically," he added. "It’s impossible not to be inspired by how they’ve weathered this storm."

The actor also talked about raising funds for Ukraine as an ambassador for United24's "Army of Drones" campaign.

"Here I sit in the comfort of my own home when in Ukraine there are power outages and food shortages and people are really suffering,” he said. "It motivates me to do as much as I can."
