Chris Rock Opens Up About His Oscars 2023 Hosting Offer Decision

The comedian and actor mentioned an offer to host while performing a stand-up show.

Chris Rock told an audience at a show that he declined an offer to host the 2023 Academy Awards.

After Will Smith's infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences apparently thought that Rock might want to come back next year for the main hosting gig.

According to the Arizona Republic, while performing at the Arizona Financial Theatre in downtown Phoenix as part of his Ego Death World Tour, Rock told his audience about receiving an offer to host, but explained that he turned it down.

He then compared the situation to the O.J. Simpson trial and the murder of the late Nicole Brown Simpson.

Rock said it would be like asking Nicole "to go back to the restaurant" where a waiter found a pair of her mother Juditha Brown's reading glasses, as reported by PEOPLE

The crowd encouraged him to talk about the slap incident. The 57-year-old said that the hit hurt, referencing Smith's performance as Muhammed Ali in the 2001 biopic, Ali

He went on: "He's bigger than me. The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith."

Rock also reportedly said that he was offered a Super Bowl commercial following the Oscars, but turned that down, too.

The Arizona Republic reached out to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for confirmation but hasn't heard back.

In late July, Rock spoke on the slap at another stand-up show, arguing that he's "not a victim."

Rock expressed, "I’m not a victim, motherf**ker. Yeah, that s**t hurt, motherf**ker. But I shook that s**t off and went to work the next day…I don’t go to the hospital for a papercut."

Meanwhile, the Academy banned Smith from attending events for a decade, and he also resigned from the organization. Recently, the actor made his return to social media with another heartfelt apology to Rock and a series of funny videos.
